Weekly Community Readiness Plan
Build up your podβs readiness with this step-by-step 8-week preparedness guide.
ποΈ 60-Day Checklist: Weekly Community Readiness Plan
Info
Use this guide to build your podβs preparedness one week at a time. Each week has small, concrete goals to grow safety, trust, and resilience without overwhelm.
Getting Started
Hint
This checklist pairs with 60-Day Preparedness. Use both together.
- You donβt need a bunker.
- You do need trusted people, basic supplies, and a plan.
- Expect most weekly tasks to take 30β60 minutes unless noted.
Week 1: Foundations
- Read the βRule of 3sβ
(Understand survival priorities: air, shelter, water, communication.) - Start a pod or small prep group (2β5 people)
(Meet in person or virtually; talk through shared risks and goals.) - Save local emergency contacts offline (dispatch lead, care coordinators, shelters)
(Print or write them down for blackout situations.) - Store 3 days of water per person (1 gal/day)
(Clean soda bottles work if you canβt afford jugs.) - Review your power outage plan
(Flashlights? Backups for medication refrigeration?)
Week 2: Communication
- Join or create a secure Signal group
(Translate instructions for non-English speakers if needed.) - Create a pod call tree or check-in schedule
(Makes sure everyone can be reached, even if Signal fails.) - Share a map of trusted meeting spots
(Print and use pictograms for multilingual pods.) - Practice sending a test alert (text or Signal)
- Print out a pod contact sheet for offline use
Week 3: Documentation & Identification
- Collect Red Cards / KYR cards
(Know Your Rights cards β printable templates here). - Discuss consent and documentation ethics
(Decide whatβs okay to record and share.) - Test blurring faces in Signal or with tools like ObscuraCam
(Pixelate.online is another option.) - Practice secure note-taking for field reports
(Encrypted or shorthand notes; avoid full names.) - Set retention policies
(Example: delete location data after 24 hours.)
Week 4: Food, Meds, and Tradeables
- Store 7 days of non-perishable food per person
(Budget tip: bulk rice and beans are cheap and long-lasting.) - Inventory essential meds and backups
- Create a barter list (OTC meds, hygiene, batteries)
(Check local laws on barter restrictions.) - Label dietary or allergy needs within your pod
- Learn how to safely share perishable food
(Use coolers and timing to avoid waste.)
Week 5: Movement & Shelter
- Identify 2β3 fallback locations (friendβs house, community site)
(Urban: focus on stair-free safe spots. Rural: map backroads.) - Share evacuation routes (foot + car)
- Make a backup transport plan (rideshare? bike? runner?)
- Pack a small go-bag (essentials, meds, documents)
- List accessible locations for disabled members
Week 6: Tools, Power, and Repairs
- Test battery-powered lights and radios
(Hand-crank radios if no solar bank budget.) - Charge backup batteries or solar banks
- Inventory shared tools (multi-tools, chargers, radios)
- Label tools by skillset (tech, repair, care)
- Build or join a neighborhood tool library
Week 7: Simulations & Triggers
- Pick 1 Trigger Event and simulate your response
(Example: sudden power outage + comms blackout.) - Role-play a pod meeting without digital tools
(Practice nonverbal signals or written notes.) - Practice calling for help without digital tools
(Whistles, chalk marks, or designated runners.) - Check water and food expiration dates
- Revisit the Readiness Grid
(Where do you need the most improvement?)
Week 8: Rebuilding & Reflection
- Add 2 new pod contacts or skill-sharing allies
- List what youβve learned + what still feels shaky
(Encourage honest sharing; consider mental health triggers.) - Identify local orgs to build alliances with
(Translate outreach materials where possible.) - Review consent practices and Red Lines
(Red Lines = actions your pod wonβt cross.) - Optional: Start a shared garden or seed swap
Important
Preparedness isnβt fear β itβs care, dignity, and self-determination. Small steps taken together are stronger than stockpiles.
